How To Use A Sewing Machine

Take your samples home with you and have everything you need to refer to in the future. This is one of our favourite sessions as it’s like teaching someone to drive, as soon as you get it, you’re on your way. Scheduled classes are shown at the bottom of the page.

Beginner’s Sewing Masterclass

A photo of some fabric and threadThis is great class if you know a little sewing – so long as you can use a machine you will be able to handle this class no problem. We will show you techniques that you will use time and time again. Knowing a few simple techniques will help you go a long way to complete all sorts of projects whether used in craft, dressmaking of furnishings. You will leave with a folder of samples to refer to in the future.

Beginner’s Patchwork

Different fabrics and tools for patchworkingHave you often looked at quilts on line and in books and wondered where to start? Well, this is the class for you.  In this one day workshop we take the mystery out of modern patchwork and hopefully kick start your creative side to produce easy but effective patchwork items (quilts/table runners/cushions) for all your friends and family.  A full day packed with tips and inspiration that will have you going home with small samples and big ideas.

Handling your fabric

Rotary Cutting – Equipment and use

Basic Sewing Machine Use

Achieving an accurate 1/4” seam

Pressing

Four Patch Blocks

Nine Patch Blocks

Using one of the blocks we will make a simple cushion cover

Materials Needed:

We have sewing machines for you to use but if you would like to bring your own please advise us at the time of booking. If bringing your own machine, a 1/4” foot would be useful, but not essential. You will also need to bring along 50cm x 110cm of three co-ordinating cotton fabrics and cotton thread.

Curtains

A photo of a tape measure, curtain hooks and fabricDressing homes, especially windows  can be very expensive in this class you get the chance to make your own lined curtain sample eventually allowing you to save a small fortune. Please note that due to space and time, you will make a half-meter sample curtain as a reference for future use. Your sample will have everything you need to make full size version curtains at your leisure.

Roman Blinds

A photo of a tape measure, curtain hooks and fabricA one-day workshop, which will give you the skills and knowledge to create your own roman blinds. As well as practical information on measuring and sewing, we will also discuss how to hang the blinds using a roman blind kit with a velcro faced tracking.   Due to space and time, you will make a half-metre blind sample, which will show you everything you need to make full size blinds at your leisure.

Sumptuous Piped Cushion Masterclass

Create gorgeous professional-looking cushion covers yourself. We’ll show how to make a piped cushion with a zip fastening. A lovely addition to your home and also ot give as gifts.

What we will cover in the session

We will cover the following in the session to create your cushion cover

Correct measuring of cushion pad to get a plump finish

Marking fabric and cutting

How to create professional corners

How to insert piping

How to insert a zip

What you need to bring to make your cushions

We aim to make a standard cushion with piping . Please don’t spend a lot of money on fabric, a simple calico will suffice if you want to gain confidence before unleashing yourself on the expensive stuff!

A square or rectangle cushion pad – any size

A zip approx the width of your cushion pad

Enough fabric (preferably cotton medium weight) to make a front and back with seam allowances

Thread to match your fabric

Piping cord enough to go around the cushion pad

Pre cut bias binding tape in a contrast colour enough to go around your cushion pad

Cushions starter kit

If you don’t have the time to get everything you need for the class, you can buy one of our starter kits for £10 on the day. You’ll have everything you need to make a 16’’ square cushion . The kit includes fabric, piping, zip and a standard cushion pad.

Christmas Stockings

A photo of Christmas bunting and stockingsHo Ho Ho. Christmas is round the corner and we get very excited by Christmas in Bobbin Towers. This is a lovely session and one we are really looking forward to as it’s an excuse to crack open the mince pies. We will make a lovely Christmas stocking with applique so you can add your own names and ideas to the design if you wish. Your imagination is really the only thing stopping you! We will have lots of examples to give you some inspiration and get you feeling creative and festive.

60 cm of your chosen fabrics (this will make a medium sized stocking)

60 cm hessian if you wish to make a sac

We will have on hand our stash of fabrics and trims etc that you can dip into if you wish, some will be free and others a few pence.

If you don’t have time to get your fabrics before the class we have a basic Christmas stocking kit that you may purchase for £5 from us on the day.

Free Motion Machine Embroidery

Embroidery stitched card of posh welliesIn the 4 hour class you will learn how to hoop up your fabric and set your machine up ready to create wonderfully wobbly lines. You’ll then get to grips with using your machine without feed dogs, ‘drawing’ with your machine and adding splashes of colour with fabrics.

By the end of the class you’ll have a selection of sample pieces and have created your very own framed card to take away.
Not artistic? No sewing experience? No problem! This fun, versatile technique has no rules and knows no boundaries, you are free to create with it as you fancy. Learn to use your sewing machine to create works of art.
